The vital role played by combined operations and special intelligence units - such as Force 136, Z Special Unit, and the famed Chindits - in disrupting the Japanese war effort is frequently overlooked. This talk will explore how winning over the local populations and becoming expert in jungle warfare and survival, use of raids, sabotage and guerrilla attacks significantly undermined the Japanese and helped turn the tide of the war in the Far East.

Robert Fleming is Information and Community Outreach Curator at the National Army Museum, London. His research focuses on the effect and legacy of imperialism and conflict on post-colonial societies, with a particular focus on the age of new imperialism (1870's-1945), the world wars, and post-war decolonisation. He also has a strong interest in the role of British Empire military forces in the World Wars and the role infrastructure plays on urban and national development, particularly military installations and transportation systems such as fortifications and railways.
